Well my friends, I am back with the dramatic conclusion to my adventures in refinishing my hardwood floors with a dark walnut stain. In case you're new to this saga, here's a little recap: I bought a house. Here are the floors in all their glory:

You will probably notice that the color of the floor may vary slightly from image to image. The lesson here: if you're staining floors (or painting walls), it's always a good idea to experiment with color options in your own space. You may like a color in someone else's house or bedroom or in a photo you found on Pinterest, but that shade may look totally different in your home. With that out of the way, let's take a look. As I mentioned before, I chose dark walnut for the stain color. I shared it with you in my previous post, but here is the color of the bottom (left) floors compared to the top (right) ones. I wanted to avoid orange undertones, and this dark walnut stain was perfect. I don't know if you can see it in one of the photos, but I will have to repaint all the base moldings as they have been stained. It might have been a bit excessive, but I was in no rush and didn't want to risk damaging the new finish. Since then, I've been using what I have to start making the upstairs furnished and functional. I still have a long way to go, but I feel more like home. Thinking Of Staining Your Hardwood Floors A Dark Color?

So we thought we'd create a blog post to answer the most common questions we get about choosing, applying and living with dark stained floors. Oak stains very well and can be stained from light to dark colors as you can see in the photo below…

But… if you have a naturally dark exotic wood floor, such as ipe or jatoba, then we strongly suggest that you do not stain it for two reasons:

2) They contain natural oils which can make them extremely difficult to achieve an even, consistent look. This is one of the darkest floors we've done...

It is possible to make your hardwood floors black if you really want them to be that dark, but most of our customers choose something lighter like a black/white hardwax oil mix, or a mix Jacobean/Ebony stain or a Coffee Brown color. The photo below shows the result of a three-coat Rubio Monocoat system for very dark floors…

In order to achieve a more even color and depth, as well as a few darker shades, we also go through a process called water bursting when coloring floors with darker colors. Another color that looks great, and is a mix of dark and light, is this mix of Rubio Monocoat Pre-Color Easy with White Oil…

How easy are dark floors to maintain? It is because of cheap and poor quality finishes that dark stained floors have a reputation for showing scratches easily. It's like how dark colored cars look dirtier faster than beige cars...not that they're dirtier, but they look dirtier faster because you can see every light color stain more easily with the dark background. Dark stained floors will help anchor a room and give you the freedom to put bright, light colors on the walls – or even just plain white – that will add brightness to the room.
